As an update to the original grapevine shootout with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Canon EOS 500D, here is the same shot with a Canon EOS 50D. Unfortunately I didn’t have the same lens (Sigma 50mm f1.4), so this is shot with a Canon EF-S 18-200 mm F3.5-5.6 IS lens.

Although not really comparable, I thought it would be fun to see how it came out.

John at FiftyFootShadows has just released the long-awaited iPhone 4 wallpaper pack.
I’ve been a fan of the photography on FiftyFootShadows since I discovered it last year and I love the way the images are composed. I know that I’ve posted about the beach ones before but this is great - there should be something for everyone.
Now all we need is Apple to allow us to have an auto-changing wallpaper à la OS X or Vista…

Here are some sample pictures from the 5D Mark II. I love the fast Sigma lens, but it can’t match the more expensive Canon ones. I think I’m going to have to get myself a fast lens and a DSLR at some point - you can have so much fun with the depth of field.
Thanks to Jack for being such a good subject.

I’m doing a photoshoot on Saturday for a work event and so I’m borrowing our new Canon 5D Mark II with various lenses. I’m used to taking most of my photos with my Canon S90 or occasionally a 450D so this is quite a step up. Still, thanks to some advice from professional photographer Lisa Bettany and hopefully some good weather, I should get a few good shots for the website.
Now is a good time to chime in with any tips! The lenses I have for tomorrow are:
I’ve only ever really had one lens at a time to play with so I’m fairly clueless as to what I should be using and when. I’ve already figured out that I like the Sigma lens and the great depth of field you can get at f1.4.
Hoping to get outside and take a few pictures before it gets dark this evening – just waiting for the battery to charge.
All assistance/tips/links to things to read/examples of photos you’ve taken with the above lenses/camera gratefully received!

I love the images on fiftyfootshadows.net – it’s always exciting to see some new images to use as wallpapers. This website is what I use as inspiration for my own ‘minimal’ wallpaper shots (coming soon!).

I really want a DSLR with some nice lenses. I’m not sure if it’d be worth spending the extra to get something above an entry level though. At the moment I use a Canon S90 compact which is actually pretty good – a perfect balance of portability, usability and image quality. I’d like to graduate up to full DSLR status at some point though. Let me know in the comments if you have any good recommendations.
