Less than 24 hours after being made available for pre-order, the iPhone 4 has sold out in Apple’s UK store. TUAW are reporting that AT&T are also sold out in the US. I wonder how many were made available for pre-order. I bet it wasn’t a trivial number.

Glad I got my order in early enough. Did you manage to get an order in or are you waiting to pick one up on launch day? Let me know in the comments along with which model you went for!

This is exactly the calculation that I did to work out if the 16GB iPhone 4 would be big enough for me. I came to the same conclusion that with a camera shooting 720p HD video, only the 32GB model would have enough storage to make the best use of it.

I wish I had the same sense of minimalism/self-control that Patrick Rhone over at Minimal Mac (a great website that every Mac owner should read) has. He’s planning on sticking with his iPhone 3G instead of “rushing out to buy an iPhone 4”.
While I fully agree that it’s admirable to use what you have, I love (and am proud to be) an early adopter of new tech. I also feel that I absolutely get the best out of any gadgets or technology that I own. For that reason, I’ll be heading out on launch day to get myself an iPhone 4 – mainly so I can get a good look at that screen.
Sorry Patrick.
Just waiting for O2 to announce when I can actually order one instead of telling me how much data I won’t be able to use when I get it.

A good, budget cover – definitely improves the ‘holdability’ of iPad when reading.

I’m slightly concerned that my iPad won’t be delivered on the 28th after all. My order recently changed to ‘processing’ when others I know have had theirs changed to ‘shipped’ already. I’m hoping it’s not something to do with the O2 SIM card that’s holding it up.
My theory is that the 3G iPads with SIM cards need to be sent to an Apple distribution centre to be bundled together. Then they’ll be shipped from the UK rather than China. At least I hope that’s what’s going to happen!
Let me know in the comments if your iPad has or hasn’t shipped yet.
Update: Just called Apple Customer Service (who, by the way, are excellent) and it turns out that because they are dealing with such a large volume of orders at the moment (read: the iPad is very popular!), they are having to batch process them. I’m assured that my iPad will be dispatched this evening for delivery on the 28th as expected. Thanks Apple!

Turns out that updating the firmware on your HTC Android phone to Android 2.1 means that all of your text & picture messages are deleted along with all of your apps. The solution? Individually forward your texts by email and redownload all of your apps. Not really OK. I guess its a good thing that there aren’t as many Android apps as there are iPhone apps.
I don’t think I’ll ever complain about iPhone OS upgrades ever again!

I really want a DSLR with some nice lenses. I’m not sure if it’d be worth spending the extra to get something above an entry level though. At the moment I use a Canon S90 compact which is actually pretty good – a perfect balance of portability, usability and image quality. I’d like to graduate up to full DSLR status at some point though. Let me know in the comments if you have any good recommendations.

I recently updated my iPhone to the latest version of the iPhone OS: 4.0. As you can see, the homescreen looks much different to previous versions, allowing you to add a background and giving you a nice 3D, reflective dock.
I’m still getting used to many of the features of OS4, particularly using folders to organise your apps, instead of trying to group them into screens. The result is that I now only have three screens of apps, instead of 9.
The non-Apple apps on my homescreen are:
- Dropbox – easily share files or keep them in sync across multiple computers and mobile devices
- Simplenote – text-based notes application which uses cloud syncing to keep notes backed up and in sync between your multiple computers or devices
- WhatsApp – send text or multimedia messages to other iPhone/WhatsApp users for free
- BeejiveIM – multi-instant messaging client (supports GTalk, MSN, Facebook etc)
- Tweetie 2 – fantastic Twitter client with a beautiful UI. Tweetie has recently been purchased by Twitter and will soon be re-branded and re-released as a free app
- Facebook – the native iPhone Facebook app
- Guardian – beautiful news app from the Guardian newspaper
- Reeder – the fastest and best RSS reader with Google Reader sync that I’ve tried
- Instapaper – Marco Arment’s brilliant reading app which allows you to mark web pages for later reading
- Things – my favourite task management app on iPhone. Also available for Mac and iPad
